Stuff  Dave Shaner

As we enter into the holiday season, we have so much for which to be thankful. Out of all of the holidays that we celebrate, Thanksgiving is probably the most spiritual of them all. After the apostle Paul encourages us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, he adds "...and be thankful." It is not an afterthought, but is the basis which allows us to be at peace. One can always find the doom and gloom side of just about anything. One that is thinking like this can never experience the peace that God wants us to have. A friend of mine was once having difficulties with his job and felt that his employer had mistreated him. It was my opinion that he had been mistreated. But instead of creating a scene or feeling bitter, he decided to thank his employer for the opportunity to work for him and then asked God to bless this man's business. I do not know how the business fared, but this man went home with peace in his heart. He decided that no matter what happened, that God would take care of him and his family.

Too often we let the world determine for us how to handle various "negative" situations. God tells us not only to be thankful but to "give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - I Thessalonians 5:18. I know that my own attitude has not been what it ought to be lately. It is so easy to let little things bug you that in the long view of things mean absolutely nothing. But this is exactly how life is viewed by many. You can choose to let outside circumstance govern your attitude or you can let Christ govern your attitude. Paul said in Romans 14:7-8, "For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." As you sit down this week, take time to not allow the concerns of this life crowd out the blessings that God has given you. They really do vastly outnumber our momentary and light troubles. God is so good. He cares for you. Let us be thankful.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK !!

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" - Isaiah 6:8

Wednesday Night Ladies Class

New Class:
Esther -
A Woman of Strength and Dignity

by Charles R. Swindoll

As you work your way through this study you will be amazed at the relevance of each message to our own times. Though God's name does not appear once in the book of Esther, His hand is on every life and His will in every decision. You will love the way He sovereignly weaves the threads of His purpose through the events that occur. Welcome to another opportunity to discover truth to live by in our Ladies Class on Wednesday evenings. This study will begin in January but it is time to sign up now so that we can order the correct number of books (approximately $7.00). Any questions please contact Jeannie Bonthius at 762-3080.

WEEKLY Friday Night Songfest

Everyone is invited to share in a weekly feast of fellowship and song. We'll share old songs, practice new songs, and enjoy the presence of God's Spirit as we praise Him. This is an opportunity to share your talent, or learn a new one, and to help improve our congregational singing. Plan to come, and bring some goodies to share. We hope many of you will want to host this special activity. To find out where the singing is each week, or to sign up to be a host, talk to John Erwin, Mike Reeves, or call the office.

How to be the Kind of Person God Wants You to Be.

Ladies, join us for an in depth study of James on Thursday, starting January 11, 2001. This 16 week course will help ease beginners into the disciplines of diligent study. You will discover that James should be the primary reader for every child of God who longs to know how true faith behaves.

Sign up for the class at the kiosk or by calling Nancy Callis at 772-6411. Please register by December 10th to ensure you receive a book ($14.50 plus postage)

Did you record the "In The Beginning Movie" that was on television last week? If you did, would be please call the office and talk to Dave Shaner.

A Note From Africa

Although to this point most of out time and energy is being spent on completing the work on our house, I feel it proper to let you know how things are going. We are doing well as a family, and are glad of the progress on our home.

There are plans for some classes to learn Kabiye phonetics to help us in our language learning. Each day is an opportunity to learn something new about the Kabiye culture. This is important because it will help us understand those we will be teaching. Tuesday I will be going with the other men on the team to witness a Kabiye ceremony which only happens every five years, so it is a unique opportunity to gain insight into the Kabiye way of life. Through avenues such as this we are gaining understanding of the Kabiye. There is a long way to go, and we look forward to reporting on headway made in these areas.

We love you all, as we remember that the congregation there is an important part of this work. We pray for you every day. Keep us in your prayers, and know that we are ever in God's loving and caring hands. May we all look upon our daily lives with an eternal perspective. To God be the glory!

In His service,

David & Becky Reeves

Mike's Memos

SEX EDUCATION

Parents, how well are you doing teaching "the birds and the bees" to your kids? It really is our job, not the schools. However, the subject of sex is so pervasive in our society, and so many parents abdicate their responsibilities in this teaching, it has become another job for the school teacher. Sex Education units are being taught in many of the schools at this time, and a five week program called PEAK - Peers Encouraging Abstinent Kids, is scheduled to begin soon. As Christian parents, we need to be very careful what our kids are being taught, especially on this subject.

When kids feel comfortable talking with an adult about sex, they will often ask, "How far is too far"? in a relationship. It may seem like the easiest way to deal with the question is to know which lines you can and which you cannot cross. In an article in Church & Family titled, "So, Where's the Line?", teenager Shana Curtis writes, "Perhaps we're missing the point. Why would we ask 'How far is too far?' as if to say, 'Show me the line where sin begins so I can go right up to it without crossing over.' Is that really the kind of life God calls us to live? When we are truly seeking the face of God, the question of lines we aren't to cross never comes up. We only have a heart desiring to please God. Forget the lines. Flee from every appearance of evil, and run toward the Lord. Desire an intimate relationship with God, as you strive to live holy and joyful lives." I believe Shana is right on target.

In the Coeur d'Alene school district, the abstinence based program called PEAK, will be taught. It stresses the importance of virginity and abstinence and sounds good on the surface, but I want to be sure it is teaching that abstinence means, wait until marriage, not just wait until you are older. In the lower grade classes they will use high school students as teachers to make a stronger impact on the kids, and this can be very positive. I have talked with the district curriculum coordinator and feel very good about the intentions of these classes, and I've asked to see a copy of the curriculum , and the methods being use to teach it. If you have information or questions, let's get together and talk. Let's be sure our kids are getting the same message at school as we give them at home and church.

Please check your Mail Box! Mail left over two weeks are be removed from the box and mailed to you. Bulletins; rosters, cards, etc are all put in the mail boxes; you may be missing something good!

CCS Corner

The first / second grade class is excited about the new computer. The students are writing stories, taking quizzes, learning words in other languages and even watching educational movies on this computer. The computer is on a rolling cart and can be moved from classroom to classroom. We are thankful to have such a tool. A special thank you to Robin and Randy Davis for the world book millennium 2000 deluxe CD-Rom.

We are also thankful for the Bible materials and ideas from Jean Grow. She has given us games to learn the Old Testament books. These are a nice complement to the song that Kathy Morse and I are teaching the children.

We have so much to be thankful about. Sometimes we forget how greatly we are blessed. Students were impressed recently with the network presentation of "Helen Keller". God has given each child an abundance of blessings, they are all gifted in many ways. I am blessed by these children.....It is a joy to watch them grow.

Next Tuesday, C.C.S. will have a special "Thanksgiving" presentation by all the students (K-8) at 11:00. Please attend and share in the blessings.

WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. - Zig Ziglar

Several years ago the people listen in Who's Who in America were analyzed. Researchers discovered that it took 25,000 laboring families to produce 1 child who would be listed in Who's Who. It required 10,000 families in which the father was a skilled craftsman, 6,00 Baptist preachers, 5,000 lawyers, 5,000 Presbyterian preachers, 2,500 dentist, and 1,200 Episcopalian priests to produce someone who's listed in Who's Who. However, every 7 Christian missionary families produced a member of Who's Who. I can only speculate on the reasons for the remarkable difference. Surely most of the preachers from the various denominations were men and women of faith, but I believe the missionaries, in most cases, demonstrated a stronger commitment. Their example demonstrated their faith and courage to their children. Also, they probably did not have many things to give to their children, but the mother and father, with fewer distractions such as daily newspapers and television, were probably spending an unusual amount of time with them. The kids had a day-to-day example and a chance to study what real success was all about. Needless to say, the parents were teaching and preaching the Bible every day and felt a unique relationship with God through the person of Jesus Christ. Undoubtedly the role modeling and demonstration of their faith played a significant part in the development of the children.

All of us have heard that we teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are, which is exactly what God tells us in Luke 6:40 (NKJV): "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher." My mother repeatedly said to me as a young father, "Son, your children pay more attention to what you do than to what you say." In many cases, the missionary family had to learn to communicate in a different language from their native language and get along with people of different cultures, which brought about a maturing of the youngsters. Then, when the kids returned to America to live, they had a chance to view the difference in the opportunities in America, and they capitalized on those opportunities.

The bottom line from Zig: God's Word is an enemy for depression, an escape from temptation, the promise of the future, as well as a guide, hope and inspiration for now and always.
