Stuff  Dave Shaner

Next week will be our Missions seminar with Roger and Martha Dickson. They are currently serving the Lord and His church in Capetown, South Africa. He is also the Director of the International Bible School where they teach Bible correspondence courses all over the world. We will be meeting Sunday through Tuesday evening, November 19-21. The Sunday meeting times will be on our normal Sunday schedule. We will be meeting Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. There will be a fingerfood/ desert fellowship after Sunday evening services and there will be no LTC classes. Also, remember there will be no Wednesday evening service that week to encourage all to come to the seminar. It is always encouraging to me to have guests who have devoted themselves to sharing the gospel in a different part of the world. We are very excited to be able to have them here. You will enjoy them very much. We are looking for different members to invite them over for a meal. If you would like to be able to host the Dickson's to a meal, be sure to contact Ivan Archer.

Even though the summer camping season at Princes' Pine is over, there have been some significant changes for next year. With these changes, we feel that we will be better able to serve our young people. We will continue to have Teen Camp I, June 12-19, for grades 7-12 completed. Bob Harmon will be its director. Music Camp, June 20-27, grades 7-12 will be directed by Mike Reeves. What was formerly Teen Camp II has grown into 2 different camps. Senior Camp, July 28-August 5, will be for grades 9-12 and directed by Jeff Crow. Junior Camp, August 6-12, will be for grades 6-8 and directed by Dave Shaner. Preteen Camp, grades 3-5, will be August 13-19. A director has not yet been assigned. We feel that this will enable us to use our facilities better while providing an extra week to serve the young people. If you would be interested in working at any of the above sessions, let either Mike Reeves or myself know. We will be happy to plug you into the system. The camp has served thousands of young people over the years and we are looking for more great things to happen.

Have a Great Week!

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" - Isaiah 6:8

REMEMBER NEXT. SUNDAY EVENING

Roger Dixon will speak at 5:30 in the main auditorium. Please stay afterwards for a finger food fellowship. This will be a very special service to begin our three day meeting with him. All Sunday night Bible Study Groups and Wednesday classes will be dismissed.

BIBLE STUDY GROUPS: Please bring fingerfood and desserts for the fellowship after Roger Dixon's lesson

At Water's Edge - A report from Astoria, Oregon

Astoria, an Oregon coastal hamlet, has a rich history back to the days of Lewis and Clark. The Corps of Discovery found it to be a harsh environment. Likewise, the Lord's church has a rich history at Astoria and struggles to persist. Romans 6:18 speaks to becoming slaves to righteousness. Jim and Diane Rude are such missionary slaves, whom Dalton Gardens congregation helps support.

The church is active in doing creative ministries. With Vacation Bible School we went a new route by going to the Retirement Center, a V.B.S conducted for senior citizens. There were activities plus studies of the elderly in the Bible and the differences they made. Abraham & Sarah, Moses, Job, Noah and others were productive for God in old age. Attendance and attention were good and plans are to do it again next year.

Reaching into the community is our focus. Weekly worship services are conducted at the Retirement Center and Youth Correctional Facility. Jim states that the youth effort is a new and exciting work. Also, the local Rescue Mission is a place of preaching and teaching monthly at their facility. A week was spent at the local fair with a booth letting the community know of our ministries.

Another effort which members were excited about is our "Coat Giveaway" held last Saturday, Nov 11th. This is an outreach of the clothing bank ministry. Advertising this event in the papers and on the local cable television lets the community know of a church who cares. While giving away coats, hot cups of coffee and cider, and smiles, seeds were being planted for Christ.

The Rudes' work extends beyond the Oregon water edge. Jim began year 2000 with a trip to India. Sons David and James accompanied him. Two weeks were spent teaching and training over 100 young Christian men and women to be evangelizing villages of their home areas. The remainder of the time was spent traveling from village to village telling the good news of God's love. Jim had the privilege to enter a village where no white man, let alone a minister, had ever been allowed. Around 15 people obeyed the gospel and a new church was started..PRAISE GOD!!

New Class -
Esther
A Woman of Strength and Dignity
by Charles R. Swindoll

As you work your way through this study you will be amazed at the relevance of each message to our own times. Though God's name does not appear once in the book of Esther, His hand is on every life and His will in every decision. You will love the way He sovereignly weaves the threads of His purpose through the events that occur. Welcome to another opportunity to discover truth to live by in our Ladies Class on Wednesday evenings. This study will begin in January but it is time to sign up now so that we can order the correct number of books (approximately $7.00). Any questions please contact Jeannie Bonthius at 762-3080.

Another New Class -
How to be the Kind of Person God Wants You to Be.

Ladies, join us for an in depth study of James on Thursday, starting January 11, 2001. This 16 week course will help ease beginners into the disciplines of diligent study. You will discover that James should be the primary reader for every child of God who longs to know how true faith behaves.

Sign up for the class at the kiosk or by calling Nancy Callis at 772-6411. Please register by December 10th to ensure you receive a book ($14.50 plus postage)

WEEKLY Friday Night Songfest

Everyone is invited to share in a weekly feast of fellowship and song. We'll share old songs, practice new songs, and enjoy the presence of God's Spirit as we praise Him. This is an opportunity to share your talent, or learn a new one, and to help improve our congregational singing. Plan to come, and bring some goodies to share. We hope many of you will want to host this special activity. To find out where the singing is each week, or to sign up to be a host, talk to John Erwin, Mike Reeves, or call the office.

Mike's Memos

In my column of this week's Family News I want to share an article which Monica shared with me by Ron Hutchcraft based on Isaiah 1:11

"The Compartment Charade"

When I'm speaking at a youth conference and I show up on the platform with a pie and a can of whipped cream, it seems to make the front row a little nervous. But not to fear - it's only an illustration, not a weapon. I have my pie cut into six slices, and I cover one of those slices with a generous serving of whipped cream. Then the big question to the audience - "How many slices are going to taste like whipped cream?" There's no trick question here. One slice will. Then I spray all over that pie - and there's whipped cream everywhere. And then I repeat the question. This is not hard. Every slice of the pie now will taste like whipped cream. Which, whether you realize it or not, could have a lot to do with how God feels about you as a Christian!

When we think about letting Jesus Christ be the Lord of our lives, we tend to think of one big slice that will be His - it becomes the Jesus slice of your life. You read His Book, attend His meetings, give to His offerings, believe all His beliefs, learn His language. That spiritual slice of our lives really tastes like Jesus.

But when Jesus talks about being our Lord, He's talking about changing the flavor of every slice of life - how you act at work, at home, at school . . . what you do with your money, your talents, your friends. . . what you watch and listen to. But you and I live in the Age of Compartmentalization - where our beliefs are pretty much one compartment of our life. After all, you just believe your beliefs, right? And if you believe them, and visit them every Sunday at the Belief Museum, that's enough, right? -- I really believe this stuff. We may not agree openly, but surveys - and just everyday life - show that a lot of us live like our relationship with Jesus is just a slice of our life. An important slice, but just a slice.

In Isaiah 1:11, God reveals His shocking reaction to our compartmentalized faith. "'The multitude of your sacrifices - what are they to Me?' says the Lord . . . 'I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats . . . Stop bringing meaningless offerings . . . When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.'" Imagine - your Lord calling all your Christian meetings and activities "meaningless" . . . telling you that all your God-stuff is a waste of time in His eyes . . . that He's not going to respond to your prayers.

Here's the reason. God says, "Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of My sight. Stop doing wrong, learn to do right!" Then God proceeds to name specific areas where their lives did not measure up to their beliefs. The message is clear. No matter how beautiful the spiritual compartment of your life is, it means nothing when the rest of your life contradicts it.

Your Lord responds to what you live, not what you believe. And maybe right now He's seeing how you cheat in your business . . . how you treat your family . . . how you watch or listen to portrayals of things that He hates . . . your racial prejudice . . . your out of control mouth . . . what you're doing romantically - and, in His holy eyes, you are neutralizing whatever you're doing over there in the spiritual compartment of your life.

Jesus asks this blunt question - "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46). He bought you with His life. He didn't pay for just a slice of your life. Either He's Lord of all or He's not Lord at all! Amen?

CCS Corner

With the month of November upon us and Thanks-giving in just a few weeks, we have been talking about things we are thankful for.

All of my class was so excited for the snow this week. (actually I was just as guilty) God has made so many beautiful things but my favorite is that first snow fall!!!!

I asked my class what they were thankful for ( you never know what 5 and 6 year olds might say). Here is the response...

Christine- Mom and Dad
Austin- Jesus
Ryan- Jesus died for our sins
Jacob- Halloween
Hunter- Jesus
Catherine- Love
Cole- Mom for giving me milk.
Bryce- Mom for getting better

JUST A REMINDER today is the last day to order cookie dough. It's pre-made just spoon and bake. What a fast way to make "Hot" cookies. Please see one of us to order!!! Have a wonderful week and take time to enjoy God's blessings.

Thanksgiving Baskets

We would like to be able to help restock the Soup Kitchen and help those less fortunate over the holidays. Be sure to pick up a grocery bag with suggested items, fill it, and return it as soon as possible. The soup kitchen staff will make up as many boxes of food to help others as we receive donations. Cash graciously accepted as well. Thanks.

WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. - Zig Ziglar

Several years ago the people listen in Who's Who in America were analyzed. Researchers discovered that it took 25,000 laboring families to produce 1 child who would be listed in Who's Who. It required 10,000 families in which the father was a skilled craftsman, 6,00 Baptist preachers, 5,000 lawyers, 5,000 Presbyterian preachers, 2,500 dentist, and 1,200 Episcopalian priests to produce someone who's listed in Who's Who. However, every 7 Christian missionary families produced a member of Who's Who. I can only speculate on the reasons for the remarkable difference. Surely most of the preachers from the various denominations were men and women of faith, but I believe the missionaries, in most cases, demonstrated a stronger commitment. Their example demonstrated their faith and courage to their children. Also, they probably did not have many things to give to their children, but the mother and father, with fewer distractions such as daily newspapers and television, were probably spending an unusual amount of time with them. The kids had a day-to-day example and a chance to study what real success was all about. Needless to say, the parents were teaching and preaching the Bible every day and felt a unique relationship with God through the person of Jesus Christ. Undoubtedly the role modeling and demonstration of their faith played a significant part in the development of the children.

All of us have heard that we teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are, which is exactly what God tells us in Luke 6:40 (NKJV): "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher." My mother repeatedly said to me as a young father, "Son, your children pay more attention to what you do than to what you say." In many cases, the missionary family had to learn to communicate in a different language from their native language and get along with people of different cultures, which brought about a maturing of the youngsters. Then, when the kids returned to America to live, they had a chance to view the difference in the opportunities in America, and they capitalized on those opportunities.

The bottom line from Zig: God's Word is an enemy for depression, an escape from temptation, the promise of the future, as well as a guide, hope and inspiration for now and always.
