The Ladies Day Fellowship this past weekend was very well attended with ladies coming from Idaho, Washington, and Montana. Helen Young, of Malibu, California did a terrific job of encouraging everyone to remember that we live in one world but really belong to another. I do not know how many worked on all of the various preparations for this weekend, but it was more than I can count. They always outdo themselves in putting on a top-notch program.

The congregational meeting last week was very well attended as well. The major purpose was communication between the leaders and the members. Many good suggestions were offered and positive concerns were expressed. Our shepherds are seeking to meet your needs better. Our deacons want to serve and help take some of the load off of others. But the bottom line is that we as a church represent a body, the body of Christ. Each member of his body must be actively involved, with each one doing his/her part. When various members do not do their part, it places added responsibility and stress on the whole body. Something else usually suffers as a result. Each of us can help our elders be better shepherds if we are more involved ourselves. In this way, the elders can concentrate on visiting, praying with us, and encouraging us to remain true to the faith. Our current ministry system is divided into 3 ministries, which make up our vision statement: Winning the Lost, Maturing the Saints, and Knitting the Body Together. Three deacons were assigned to each ministry. Various activities and programs are sub-categorized under each ministry. The deacons, in turn, are to get as many as possible in the congregation involved to facilitate the work that needs to be done. In doing this, the goal is to have more of a team approach. We hope to have more of these congregational meetings in the future, so that we can understand what everyone in the body is doing.

Mike Reeves and I would like to say a special "Thank You" to all who have pitched in and helped us during our current secretary outage. So far, Cheryl Mullaly, Vicki Laititi, Jean Grow, David Morgan, Pat Riggs, Paula Jaynes, Helen Rouse, Suzy Litalien, Georgette Rude, Jan Almond, and Sally Archer have been extremely helpful in this regard. Thank You!

Have a Great Week!!

"Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body."

Philippians 3: 20-21

A big thank you!

A big thank you is extended to all of those men who helped with our septic/drain field and concrete sidewalks! Thank you to Jim Almond, Ivan Archer, Jim Cochran, Mike Reeves, Don Rude, Eldon Rude, John Simpson, Jerry Welch and Paul Welter.

Note: Like the new carpet, the new septic system needs to be taken care of. A septic system is not like a city sewer. We cannot dump garbage, paint, feminine hygiene items, paper towels, sand, etc. down the sink or into the toilets. The old system lasted 20 years. Our new one will last longer than that if we use it properly. We must always remember to be good stewards of the blessings we receive.

A Tour of the Holy Lands

Would you be interested in a tour of the Holy Land, Jordan, Petra and Rome? Dave Shaner will be heading a tour March 24 - April 7, 2001. Brochures of the trip are available in the foyer and in the office. For additional information, please see Dave.

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the Ladies Fall Fellowship, before, during and after! You all helped in ways too numerous to mention, with your food, time, talents and the big and little, upfront and behind the scene jobs. Not only were your participation and prayers appreciated but also our working together brought a closeness within the family and praise and glory to God. Thanks again for everything!

- Ladies Fall Fellowship Committee

MEN'S EARLY MORNING
BIBLE STUDY GROUP

The magi project:

Interested in making a child's Christmas dream come true?

The Women's ministry is making boxes to be sent to less fortunate children throughout the world. We could use everyone's help. All it takes is a shoe box full of age specific toys, books, hygiene items or school supplies plus a $5.00 check for shipping costs. You can fill a box on your own or bring the supplies and we will put them together for you. Financial support would also be welcome; we will need $5.00 for each box sent. Brochures explaining how to fill a box and suggested items to put in a box are available on the kiosk. All boxes and supplies should be turned in no later than October 25th. If you would like to help or have any questions, please ask Alyssa Frahm.

Missing the Secretary?

While we are in an interim mode in the church office, some adjustments are being made in the finances. If anyone needs to be reimbursed, have a bill paid, or get a check sent out, please turn in your request before noon on Thursday. Checks will then be issued for signature on Sunday morning and will be available to be picked up or mailed. If any emergencies arise that require more immediate attention where a disbursement needs to be sent out right away, please see one of the ministers or the office staff and it will get taken care of. If you have any questions about all this, please contact Tim Frahm at 762-0211.

We, as a group of ladies, continue to study, grow and be amazed by the promises and blessings that God gives through prayer. All women are welcome to join this challenging study on Wednesday evenings in the small auditorium. The topics for the month of October and the group leader will be:

Oct. 11th (ch. 6): When God is Silent - Teri Dupey
Oct. 18th (ch. 7): The Lord's Pattern of Prayer - Jennifer Rude
Oct. 25th (ch. 8): Intercessory Prayer - Linda Bruner

Missions Day

Our 3rd annual mission focus will concentrate during the month of November on the work of this congregation in spreading the gospel. Highlighting this concentrated attention is a special mission Sunday and mini meeting November 19th to 21st. Roger and Martha Dickson, missionaries from the International School of Biblical Studies, Cape Town, South Africa will share great things God is doing throughout the world. The meeting theme : " Walking in Jesus' Steps to Receptive Hearts." With David, Becky and Hanna Reeves now in Togo and Ralph and Anna Crump in Nigeria, W. Africa, we have an intense interest in the work of Africa. Brother Dickson reports at this year's " Africans Claiming Africa " conference there was a count of 12,500 churches with a membership of around 800,000. Mission work is beginning to flow from the African nations. One of World Bible School students from Ghana, Alfred Koomson, moved to New York. He and several Ghanaians have established a new congregation made up of Ghanaians that numbers about thirty-five. They have baptized two Ghanaian souls.

The above figures need to be kept in correct perspective. They counted over 4,000 churches in the country of Malawi and over 3,000 in Nigeria. These two countries have 56% of the congregations. There are 50 nations in Africa, and thus, there is much work to be done. How do these numbers compare with America? We have approximately 12,000 churches of Christ with about 1,200, 000 Christians.

RELIGIOUS SYNCRETISM

The sin of mixing the worship of Jehovah God with the worship of other gods has been a problem since the beginning of time, and is so repulsive to God that he has spoken more against it than any other sin. Throughout Kings, Chronicles and the prophets God condemns idolatry in its various forms. ie "Solomon followed Ashtoreth, the godess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites. So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done."

Like Solomon, New Testament believers today do not usually abandon the worship of God as revealed through Christ, rather they may add to their worship of God the worship of other gods.

This, of course, has always been detestable and intolerable to our Father. The practice of syncretism does not suggest that Christians are literally bowing to an idol as such. Our idolatry is more sophisticated. You see, idolatry, in the final analysis, is that which determines our choices and claims our time, strength, and consciences. It takes a keen mind and absolute honesty to ferret out and admit the identity of our main object of worship. What truly is in the center of our lives that takes the most of our time and strength, and around which we schedule our daily choices? That, actually is our god!

Understanding this, forces us to really look at our lives and determine whether the activities and "things" in our lives are a part of our worship of the one true God, or if they have become gods in and of themselves. And of course, the god "self" is the idol most easily enthroned in our lives. Almost without realizing it we can claim Jesus as Lord, and even be active in church, and yet serve self, or other gods. That's religious syncretism, and God is not pleased. Shall we pray????
