August 27th, 2000 Short By Stuff Dave Shaner Remember that this Wednesday evening is our monthly Barbecue here at the church building. See the accompanying list for what your group is to bring. If you are not a part of any Bible Study Group at this time, simply bring whatever you wish. We always have enough to go around. The soup kitchen faculty normally provides meals on Wednesday evening. This will be taking its place this week, but we will still have many visitors from the community for the Bar-B-Que. Be sure to come early if you can and get to know our guests. The food will be great, but the fellowship will be even greater. We will not be having our regular Bible Studies this Wednesday evening, but we will be having a devotional praising God with singing. Be sure to be here. You will not want to miss it!! Also, starting this Friday evening, there will be our 18th congregational campout! It will be at Farragut State Park. See the accompanying article for details. There will be church services held both a the church building in Dalton Gardens and at the camp site. Labor Day is a family weekend. This is a great opportunity to spend it with your spiritual family. This is somewhat of a final salute to summer as well as the start of a new school year. Many have been out of town on family trips and our local attendance has been down, but let's get rejuvenated and encourage each other to get more involved in the Lord's work via His church. Our numbers have been low lately. As we settle down into a routine, let's get those back up as each person represents another soul. Remember what God said about even one more soul, "I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." - Luke 15:7. If each of us would encourage one person to come to church, we could conceivably double our numbers. We are not after numbers so much as souls. God has commissioned us to 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. - Luke 14:23. God wants us to sit at his banquet table and to bring others with us. What an opportunity! What a God! Have a Great Week !! Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans 15-7 Welcome Guests! Wednesday night BBQ Our final 5th Wednesday Fellowship BBQ for the summer is upon us. This Wednesday, August 30, 2000, we will again be meeting from 5-7 P.M. to share a meal and devotional time together. Please come & bring your friends, it's a perfect time to visit and relax with your Christian family. Again, our Soup Kitchen guests will be sharing this meal with us, so please plan on providing a "double-portion". Mike's Memos What's ailing this church? Over the past several months , and in several different ways, I've been asked, and I have also been personally challenged by the persistant question, "What's ailing this church? And of course the obvious answer is, "This church is made up of a bunch of sin-sick individuals." That truth is quite different from the image we sometimes like to portray.... "a showcase for the righteous." Although we do want to put our best foot forward, the fact is we are a hospital filled with the sinful and dying .... but heaven-bound by the love and grace of God. However, the question is a legitimate challenge to us all as we struggle from week to week to be what God wants us to be. It's a question that we each need to face individually, as well as one we must face as the Lord's body here at Dalton. In my Wednesday Morning and Wednesday Night Bible Classes we shared God's message to Israel through his prophet Amos. In chapter 6 God condemns Israel because of Her complacency. In chapter 7 He promises destruction, but twice relents because of Amos' intercessory prayer. Then God shows Amos that distruction can no longer be avoided because Israel is out of plumb. She is crooked in three specific, overlying areas: worship, home, and government. God uses this vision of a plumb line to point out his criteria for checking the faithfulness of his people. We can certainly make application of those same three general areas, but if we really want to know, and change what's ailing this church, we must more specifically identify the areas where we are out of plumb with God's expectations. The following were suggestions from classes: a lack of love and strong fellowship; pride and selfishness, inconsistant integrity, apathy, lowered moral standards, inconsistant attendance for worship and spiritual activities, shallow prayer lives, inadequate Bible study, lack of concern for the lost. The next question is, "Do I care?" Am I, are you, willing to see these ailments and do nothing to make a change? God said it was too late for Israel. We still have today. And because of the blood of Jesus, wecan change. But it will require effort. It will require getting out of our comfort zones. It will require new zeal and enthusiasm for the Lord and for his body, the church. Yes, we'll always be plagued by the sinfulness that Satan craftily inflicts us with. But will I just wallow in my sin, and wait for God's impending judgement, or will I persistantly lift intercessory prayer to God for forgiveness for my sin and for our body, and set about, today, to change my part of what's ailing in this church?
