June 18th, 2000 SHORT By STUFF DAVE SHANER We will devoting our next few weeks to the subject of fellowship - what it is and what it is not. When you read of the early church, the disciples "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." - Acts 2:42. Notice the four ingredients that was a part of the disciples spiritual lives. The apostles teaching has been preserved for us in what we call the Bible. They were men inspired by God to pass on to us the faith. They did not speak by their own initiative but only as the Holy Spirit directed them. They also devoted themselves to the breaking of bread. This is not a reference to a common meal but to the Lord's Supper. Eating a common meal in each other's homes together was a part of their early church life, but simply being devoted to eating is not scriptural. This devotion was remembering the death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and return of our Lord. It brought them together to keep them focused on their priorities and in living the Christian life. They also devoted themselves to prayer. Communicating with God on a regular basis is our lifeblood. It has to be what keeps us going. If you are in relationship with God, then prayer has to be a vital part of your life. Albert Lemmons said that "where there is much prayer, there is much faith. Where there is little prayer, there is little faith. And where there is no prayer , there is no faith." Notice of equal importance was that the disciples were devoted to the fellowship. The word for fellowship is koinonia. It is also translated as sharing, communication, communion, distribution, contribution, partnership, and participation. The early church was a family. Everything they did was for the common good of the body. They shared each other's joys and each other's struggles. Their hearts were linked so closely that they were like one body. Love for God and love for each other dominated their daily lives. Jesus said that love would be the identifying mark of true disciples - John 13:34. Likewise, today, love needs to characterize God's church. Fellowship is family. Fellowship is caring. Fellowship is spending time with each other. Fellowship is encouraging each other to remain resolute to the Lord. "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."-1 John 3:18 "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts
2:42
Welcome ! The Dalton Gardens church's mission is to Win the Lost, Mature the Saints, and Knit the Body together. With this focus in mind, there are two elders and three deacons within each of these three ministries. The elders will serve as resource men with the deacons directing the various activities within that ministry. A listing of these ministries and activities can be found on the back of the Family News. This is simply a structure that will help us to be better organized and to help keep ourselves focused on what this church is all about. We would like to encourage each of you to be involved in an area where the Lord has gifted you. Feel free to contact any of the elders or deacons within these ministries where you would like to serve. When the whole body works together, growth occurs. Be sure to keep the Lord's work, along with all of our leaders, in your prayers every day.

Guest Article When Christians Clash With the Culture It's one thing to enjoy the beauty of the world around us, and quite another to get wrapped up in the world or the culture of our society. "The sheer multitude of our culture's words will overwhelm us unless we are people of the Word." Cultural influences attack us as Christians every day. Songs deal with suicide and drug use, movies glorify adultery, and few think of chastity as a virtue anymore. How does one survive in a secular environment so hostile to the faith? ~ Christians must be immersed in the Word. How can a young man remain pure? The psalmist's answer is clear: "By living according to your word" (Ps 119:9). The culture throws thousands of words and messages at us daily. If we do not heed the true Word, we'll become captive to the world's word. ~ Christians should remember that we are people of hope. The certain hope that we'll someday see Jesus is a truth that purifies God's people. Company is coming. With that knowledge, we are inspired to live pure, spotless lives that honor Him. ~ Christians are also confident and careful. We know that we must guard where we go, what we see, and what we do. That said, we are also confident that God will guide us safely in our walk toward Christian maturity.
