May 28th, 2000 SHORT By STUFF DAVE SHANER Next week will be a very special day in the Dalton Gardens congregation. It will be a day of Prayer and Fasting. We are asking you to consider using this day as a special time to draw nearer to God and His will. There are two items we would like for you to include as a part of this time. First, we are installing our new shepherds and deacons that morning. Any biblical church has leaders who have a heart for God. We want you to lift these men up as we draw near to His will for church leadership. Also, we want you to be in prayer for the poor of this world. Manna International, a ministry of the Redwood City church in California, is leading an effort to help 3rd world countries with basic needs such as clean water, electricity, and food. Many churches all over the U.S. are participating in this time of prayer and fasting, so that we can be made more aware of others and their needs. We would like for you to consider taking what you would have spent in food and contribute it toward Manna. They will take these contributions and oversee good works all over the world. Fasting, of course, includes not eating. But simply not eating is not the essence of fasting. When you are fasting for spiritual reasons, you are seeking the wisdom and direction of God. Nearly all of the great leaders of the scriptures fasted. Sometimes we tend to think of fasting as something that was done in the Old Testament, but is not meant for today. Jesus was questioned why his disciples did not fast as did John the Baptist's disciples. He said that it was not the time while the bridegroom was with them, but when he left his disciples would fast. Also, in setting up guidelines for fasting in Matthew 6, he said when you fast no one should know if you fast. The implication is that his disciples do fast, but that it was not something to be done for show. In Acts 13, the early church fasted as they sent their missionaries off into the field. When you abstain from food, you are abstaining from something good in order to obtain something better, the blessing of God. It was always a voluntary thing. In the New Testament, it was never something that was forced upon anyone. Likewise, we would like for you to consider joining together as a church in seeking God's will. Your life will be blessed. Have a Great Week !! "When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus." Acts
4:13

Mike's Memos June 4 - A Day of Prayer & Fasting The subjects of prayer and fasting are at the very heart of biblical teaching. No one would question the importance of prayer to our lives as Christians, and yet we easily find ourselves negligent in the practice of prayer, both personal and corporate. And then, of course, fasting is almost forgotten, even though it has been a part of religious practice almost from the beginning of time. Prayer and fasting. In God's word they seem to go together very often. Are you willing to join us in following this biblical example? For many years an organization called Manna International has led members of the churches of Christ in one of the largest humanitarian relief efforts in our brotherhood. Each year they call on Christians to fast and pray and contribute funds to relief efforts in third world countries, usually collecting over $1 million. Some wonderful work has been done in this way. We have been encouraged to participate again this year. Some families have been saving pennies according to the Manna International May Calendar. Copies of those calendars are still on the Kiosk. Parents / grandparents, this would still be a great learning experience for our children. Go to the bank and get several rolls of pennies and lead your family in this. All of us will be given an opportunity to contribute to this cause on June 4. Watch for "an offering table" in the foyer. June 4th will be a very special day, beginning with fellowship and prayer (No donuts!) at 8:00 am. Our 7th grade through adult classes will meet in the small auditorium for the ordination of our new elders and deacons. During morning worship, Dave will share a lesson on "Biblical Fasting". After a short break, all who would participate, will reassemble in the small auditorium to continue our day of prayer and fasting. There will be opportunities for singing, praying, sharing, visiting with and asking questions of our elders. I hope we will make this a day truly committed to the Lord.
Senior Saints Banquet For Teens This Saturday, June 3, is a banquet from 6-8 pm to honor all our teens. Also invited are the teen sponsors and leaders. Special programs by Four Fishermen and Dave Shaner. Seniors, please indicate at the sign up sheet in the foyer whether you can attend, and in what areas you wish to help with food. CCS Corner Solar System Models The 6th and 7th grade classes made models as a part of their study of the "universe". They were creative with materials and construction, while trying to make the models close to scale in diameters and distances from the sun. Scott Simpson and Christy Johnson had the most accurate models. In addition, students collected articles about the universe, (Some fact, some fantasy). This is when Biblical teaching entered the scene. Praise God! These students believe He is the creator of the universe and they can tell you why. Thank you church for supporting this mission. Teri DuPey P.S. Thanks Dad, for inspiring me to have my 6th and 7th grade class make models of the solar system.
