March 5th, 2000 SHORT By STUFF DAVE SHANER This Wednesday evening, we will have a special presentation by Ivan and Sally Archer. They have been in South Africa for the last 2 months working with the church and the International Preaching School. They will be encouraging us with the growth of the Lord's body in that area of the world and will also have some pictures of that area. The Dalton Gardens church's presence is being felt all over the world. Besides the Archer's work in South Africa, we have been and are currently involved in Canada, India, Brazil, Siberia, Russia, Honduras, as well as some state side works such as Astoria, Oregon and Bonners Ferry. Others involved in sharing the gospel in other places are Betty Clemetson, Russ & Jo Allen, and Fred & Opal Bonney. We are also very proud of local ministries such as the Coeur d'Alene Christian School and our Soup Kitchen. We appreciate all of these for their example and dedication in spreading the gospel. Continue to look out among the congregation
for men whom you would like to serve as our leaders for the next two years.
Every two years, we select elders and deacons. There is not a time span
specified in the New Testament. It is not an elected office, but no man
would want to serve the church, nor would he be effective, if he did not
have the backing of the congregation. Both elders and deacons, above all,
are to be servants and examples to the rest of the flock. Elders are entrusted
with a variety of special responsibilities, including prayer, the ministry
of teaching the Word, oversight of the congregation, and accountability
to God for one's spiritual welfare. The word, "deacon," actually means
servant. It is often translated "minister". A minister in the New Testament
did not refer specifically to the role of the preacher, but simply to "one
who ministers". Everyone should be a servant of Christ and His church,
yet deacons appear to be special servants appointed to carry out specific
responsibilities. We will be having some lessons on these next week, with
forms to be given to each member on March 26th. These forms will also contain
suggestions as to whom you would like to be given these responsibilities.
Be sure to keep the church and this process in your prayers. God is looking
for a few good men to lead his family through the 21st century.
"He who overcomes
will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son." Revelation

Counting Jesus A little girl returning from Sunday school was asked by her grandmother how many had been in her class that day. She replied, "Counting Jesus, there were 15 of us." ~ Beatrice Plumb in Christian Herald Out Of Africa There is much being done in Africa to bring individuals to know Christ and to expand the Lord's body. World Bible School and One Nation Under God are works many know something about. But, how are they being used to reach the African? There is the International School of Biblical Studies located in Cape Town, So. Africa, reaching nearly 1500 students. These are individuals enrolled in what can be best described as a distance learning college. Student reports come from Nigeria, Jordan, Ghana and many other places telling of evangelism success. Sally and I were afforded the opportunity to volunteer a couple of months with our missionaries working these works. Angola and the Congo have been devastated by long on going wars. A number of men refugees are now in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. A fine mission work is being done with these displaced persons. They are being taught the Gospel and when the wars are over these individuals will be forced to return to their homelands. God is active, even in a bad situation, to bring about the spread of his word. Many of these individuals will start a church upon their going home. The Southern Suburbs Church of Christ held a joint service for the French speaking and English speaking persons. This was a fine example of strengthening the tie we all share united in Christ. We experienced this and came away greatly encouraged. We can share this story and others from the six congregations with which we had some contacts. Some were house churches and others much like Dalton Gardens. In addition, our travels took us on safari to locations in the countries of Namibia, Zambia, and Malawi. Genesis 1:24 tells us God made wild animals and creatures that move along the ground. This was after we read about the birds being created in vs 20. Certainly Africa has an abundance of God's creations. Both young and not so young will enjoy seeing pictures and hearing about these creatures and their habits. We will be giving a report and showing pictures of Africa this coming Wednesday evening. Feel free to invite your friends to come and learn about southern Africa, the status of mission efforts, the culture, the wildlife and more. Time will be allowed for you to ask questions. What do you really wonder about when you think of Africa? We will do our best to help you understand our experiences. Ivan & Sally Archer Ladies Bible Class All ladies are invited to attend the Wed. night Bible Study at the building beginning March 15th at 6:30. It is a study entitled "Woman to Woman" and is designed to help Christian women in dealing with the challenges that we face today, and God's loving hand and plan in helping us deal with these challenges.
