February 6, 2000 SHORT By STUFF DAVE SHANER Last Wednesday evening was a very uplifting and encouraging experience. A great deal of time was spent in song and prayer. II Chronicles 7:14 states, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Three key elements are found here if we as a church expects blessings from God: humility, prayer that seeks his face, and repentance. In America, we like to think that we are pretty good people and can often be somewhat elevated in our own pride. The moment that we think we have it all together, we need to be careful. "So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" - 1 Corinthians 10:12. We, therefore, must humble ourselves before our Creator. Secondly, we must pray. Many people pray, but their prayer is for God to do something for them, not to seek His face. I am convinced that most people make a claim for Christianity so that God can serve them, not for they themselves to serve God! We often want His blessings without getting to know Him. When we seek His face in prayer, not just for selfish purposes, but to get to know Him, then the real blessings will flow. The third element of revival is repentance. All of us need to realize that none of us are better than anybody else. It is all too easy to point the finger at somebody else, calling for repentance, yet fail to see our own failings and sin. In God's grand scale, all of us have sinned and I doubt it does no good to claim that I have not sinned as much as somebody else. All of us must turn to God and leave our wicked ways. "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord" - Acts 3:19. This must not only be done individually, but as a community of believers. We have privatized our relationship with the Lord too much. It is not that your own personal relationship with Christ is not important - it certainly is, but Jesus Christ made us a part of a family. When we as a church family, commit ourselves to humility, prayer, and confession of sin, we open ourselves up to the leading of God. I believe this happened last Wednesday evening. It must continually happen as we place ourselves in His hands. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!

Mike's Memos May I share an article adapted from one in this month's Christian Chronicle by youth minister, Jim Pounders addressed to Parents of Teens: "Children Looking For Discipline" In our affluent American communities, parents are spending so much time away from home they are not there enough, or do not care enough to discipline their children. The result? Construction crews board up windows on equipment to keep them from being broken by rocks. School teachers constantly searching for ways to get attention. Administrators who are helpless to keep order in schools. I cannot imagine that life at home is much different. Kids may complain about it, but they are looking for direction and discipline. They are really lost without it. A child without a foundation of discipline will often grow up to be an undisciplined adult. Have you ever wondered why adults take things from the workplace? Or why adults talk incessantly while someone is speaking? Could it be that they never learned the meaning of discipline? And then they, and others wonder why they have undisciplined children? Long and often important editorials
have been written on improper discipline. I would agree with many of them.
But a child without proper discipline is destined for trouble, while a
child who respects his parents because they are disciplined and practice
discipline will have an outstanding future. Why else would the Hebrew writer
tell us that the undisciplined are like "illegitimate children"? Amen?
From The Benevolence Ministry We have the opportunity to receive, by donation, a considerable amount of perishable foods such as cold meats, bread, etc. requiring a large chest or upright freezer. We are hoping someone may have one they no longer need and would like to donate it to both the Benevolence Ministry and Soup Kitchen. The perishable items would be in great need and certainly save money and time. Please contact Jack Pierce

C.C.S. Corner What's In It For Me? Sometimes when the Church is attacked from within (by other members) or from the outside (world), we question what we are doing as well as our faith. A shallow Christian might ask YOU, "What is really in it for me?" "What is my reward?" Nearly anyone that you ask will quickly agree that living a good moral life is mandatory in their mind. But, we have to take this a a giant Step forward. We have to follow Christ and His example to be correct. To be accepted into the kingdom, we must walk in His steps and follow His Word. Paul talks about an inheritance that is coming to us. But, what is it that we are going to receive "in Christ"? Romans 8:15-17 All that God has prepared for us....... Hebrews 1:14 Salvation from sin! ........... Matthew 19:29 Everlasting life............ Knowing these things makes each day exciting! So exciting, we must share
it with others!
