January 23, 2000 SHORT By STUFF DAVE SHANER We have been talking about revival for the last few Sundays. We have seen that revival is not about gospel meetings, not about church growth, nor even an evangelistic crusade, but revival is about God visiting His people to awaken them to his presence. God was present among His people leading them out of bondage in Egypt to Mount Sinai where the Israelites experienced the fiery presence of God. But even that did not keep the people faithful for very long. God may not stay with any people if His presence is ignored. He will allow his creation to go their own way if His presence does not persuade them. The greatest horror that can happen to any people is the withdrawal of the presence of God. But it doesn't matter if you are physically poor, lame, and blind, if God is present with you, you have it all! To what lengths are you willing to go to experience the presence of God? The kingdom of God is not about experiencing His blessings. He causes his blessings to fall on the just and the unjust. It is not about being involved in church. It is not about not doing the bad things. It is about knowing God. The Lord said through Jeremiah, "This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD. - Jeremiah 9:23-24. The people of Israel had to seek the Lord. The Lord commanded them to remove their garments that represented their sinful way of life and seek him. If each of us will do likewise, removing our garments of sin, times of refreshment will come from the Lord. - Acts 3:19. I spoke with a man this week who said he would not commit himself to not not committing fornication even if the Lord were standing physically in front of him, because he didn't want to make a statement about something he may not keep. How sad, that the presence of God cannot motivate a person to holiness. We all sin and all wish we could do various things in our lives over. But commit your self and your ways to the Lord with all your heart and He will lift you up and give you strength. We don't need more strength, we need more faith and courage to act upon God's presence. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!! "Therefore
everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like
a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall
because it had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:24-25

Young Adult Bible Study College through
age 30 now have a special Sunday morning Bible class! The
class is taught by Jason Litterell and meets in room 9. We want to encourage
all our young adults to attend.
Mike's Memos In what is often called, "The Story of the Rich Young Ruler", found in Matthew 19:16-22, a young man came to Jesus and asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus told him to keep the commandments of God. The man said he had done that. So Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, and follow him. At this he went away sad, because he had great wealth. The young man had asked life's ultimate, serious question to which Jesus commanded complete, practical obedience. He wanted Jesus to interpret the commands; to explain the commands. Jesus simply wanted childlike obedience. With our educated consciences and our insightful wisdom, we often allow doubt and reflection to take the place of spontaneous obedience. It has always been obedience that God has wanted. Instead, we retreat from the reality of God to the speculations of men, and we move from faith to doubt. We keep on posing questions and presenting problems in an effort to escape the necessity of obedience. Jesus challenges us to be done with academic discussion, and get on with the task of obeying him. It is the one thing that matters. What the young man failed to
understand, as we often do, is that the step into the situation where obedient
faith is possible is not an offer which we can make to Jesus, but
always his gracious offer to us. It is not, "What can I do
to inherit eternal life?" but , Thank you Lord, for inviting me to the
selfless obedience which makes eternal life with God an awesome possibility.
We must say, "Yes, Lord, I will do whatever you say, and I will
follow you." Amen.

C.C.S. Corner Does God answer prayers? Yes, but sometimes his answer isn't always yes. I thank God every day that he said yes to my prayer. As most of you know my dad had a massive heart attack right before Christmas. I left immediately because I was told that my father's condition was very critical. The doctors weren't very hopeful. Early Tuesday morning, my father saw a star in the sky and knew that God was watching out for him. Everyday he grew a little stronger. The surgeon decided to do bypass surgery. People all over the world were praying for him. He made it through with flying colors and is still doing great. The doctors called him their miracle baby. Give the glory to God! When asked what I wanted for Christmas all I could say was that I wanted my daddy home and God gave that. I just want to thank God and thank everyone of you for the prayers. God said yes! Mrs.

Another Archer Email Another email from Ivan and Sally revealed they are doing well...the weather is much like an "August day in CDA". They are still working diligently with the Bible school. "We made a mailing of a Biblical Research Journal to the 1500 active students. The bulk of students live in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and So. Africa. The best students are those enrolled from Ghana and Nigeria. Togo had a handful of students." "This morning our assembly was the joint services of the English and French speaking groups in the Southern Shores area. There were 113 in attendance. They did some things in English, some in French and some jointly. The theme was 'We Are One'. With the French, I recognized the 'coeur'. The song book cover was Chante mon Coeur. I think that means songs of the heart." They all take to heart the 'Let the rivers clap their hands.' Due to the war in Angola, there are many Portuguese speaking people in this section of Cape Town. This cross section of 'all nations' in Christ really takes on meaning for everyone involved. There was no preaching as we would consider a sermon or lesson. But, one couldn't have had a better kind of service to build one another up. It does one a world of good to get away from our church culture. You see their focus on 'Christ' and an appreciation for being part of the family of God. And, that is where we all should be in our thinking and worship." TO SERVE January 30, 2000
