December 5th, 1999 S H O R T By STUFF DAVE SHANER We are already off to a wonderful start with Brother LaGard Smith. He will be continuing his series this evening and also Monday and Tuesday evenings. See the accompanying article for times and topics. There is also a special "Late Night with LaGard" after each evening's lessons. This is designed for those who just wish to talk with LaGard and explore some other Bible topics in-depth. This will be in the small auditorium. Remember the regular mid-week Bible Study Groups will not be meeting this week to encourage all to attend these sessions. There are also some of his books available which you may wish to purchase. These are being offered through Moyer's Family Bookstore, out of Portland, Oregon. If any titles run out, you may also order them and they should arrive this week. Be sure to make every effort to attend all of the sessions, if possible. I appreciate Mallory Jaynes and the teenagers volunteering to spearhead the Christmas basket drive this year. This will also be one of the LTC service projects for a number of them. We have already had a number of needy families whose names have been given to us to provide one of these baskets. Be sure to be generous and support them in this noble work. Next Sunday morning, a special class entitled, "Reach Out" will be offered in the adult classes. This three week long class will be held in the small auditorium. The primary purpose of this class is to teach about how we can reach out better to the visitors who frequent our assemblies. This will be a special program that can involve many people in different areas. We will be needing some people to visit our guests, some to telephone them, others to host dinners, some to provide baked goods, some to teach Bible studies and others to be prayer warriors for the entire outreach ministry. We will be looking at what scripture says about our obligation to the lost as well as provide some practical tools to help us reach out to those who have already taken a step towards Christ. As we approach the year 2000, we want to orient ourselves and do a better job in accomplishing what our Lord has asked us to do. Be sure to be here at 9 a.m for this class. Remember that a special time of fellowship starts at 8:00 a.m. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!! "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." Colossians

Mike's Memos CLASHING VALUES There are very few group settings where everyone shares the same set of values. As our world shrinks, we become more mobile, communication becomes more instantaneous, and life expectancy increases, inter-generational conflict is unavoidable. This will be true in families, at school, at work, and yes, at church too. It isn't a new problem. There have always been clashes resulting from the different viewpoints of people from different generations. The obvious need, especially for the church, is to learn how to turn those clashes into minor bumps. Three obvious keys to reducing conflict between people are understanding, acceptance and forgiveness. Our culture has changed drastically from the "Builder" generation of the early 1900's, to the "Baby Boomers" of the 50's & 60's, to the late 60's & 70's "Generation X", to the "Net Generation" or "N-Geners" of the 80's & 90's. WE DO NOT SHARE THE SAME VALUES! And, that's not all bad. We do need to share the same basic Christian values, but there are many other things that were valued in earlier generations that are of no value to those who are younger. This is not an easy thing to accept. It is important that we learn to listen and understand others' points of view, and allow for differences. This will go a long way towards opening lines of communication between the older and the younger. Acceptance is a crucial part of every relationship. Accepting someone doesn't mean that we have to approve of everything he believes. We can accept someone as a person of worth, even if we can't agree. Sometimes acceptance involves trust and even some risk, but the possibility for improved relationships should make us want to go there. Many times differences in values lead to conflicts that damage relationships. To keep the lines of communication open, it is imperative that we learn to forgive. Forgiveness frees both the forgiver and the forgiven. As we work toward resolving the differences that naturally occur between people of different generations, forgiveness may be the most important element, but probably comes more easily after the other two. Believe me, I am in no way
advocating an understanding, acceptance, and forgiveness that goes beyond
scriptural guidelines. No. God set some boundaries that must be applied
to every generation, and changing culture does not change God. However,
honest hearts and open minds are tools that God can work with to build
a people who love, and trust, and work with one another in spite of our
differences......a people determined to follow His lead and be more like
Him. May God help us to be those people.
CCS Corner Birthdays are good for you.....Statistics show that the people who have the most, live the longest! Psalm 90:12. "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Another month has passed. The staff and children remembered and thought of many blessings for November. Now CCS will praise in December "20 years of giving".

1999 Worldwide Candle Lighting Dec. 12, 1999 - National Children's Memorial Day - will be the day of the 3rd Annual Worldwide Candle Lighting. Everyone, in every time zone around the world, is invited to light a candle in honor of all children who have died, that their light may always shine. As candles go out in one time zone, they will be lit in the next, creating a wave of light that will encircle the globe. Please join us in this 24 hour memorial by lighting a candle, wherever you are, at 7 PM on December 12. For more information check out: http://www.compassionatefriends.org/
Note To Parents Parents, any time that you
are working at the building, please keep an eye on your children. Recently,
the tapes in the video library have been messed up, classrooms are missing
items (a lot of these items personally belong to the teachers), and carpets
and chairs have been sprayed with ink. Parents, please help your
children learn to respect other people's belongings. Thank you.
