November 21st, 1999 S H O R T By STUFF DAVE SHANER The greatest part about any trip is getting back home. Jim Rude, Henry Acosta, and myself just returned from Barnaul, Siberia, Russia. We were very encouraged by the work of the Lord's people there. They are involved in many aspects in training men and women to go all over Russian and plant new churches. The number of Christians in Russia is very few. Atheism has been promoted for so long that there are many who have never even heard the name of Jesus. Those who are believers in any sense are mostly older generation who are still believers in the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a very ritualistic kind of church that provides little if any help to the average person. The lack of God in their lives can be seen in the people's faces. On the other hand, because they have seen that their system has not provided the utopia that they thought, they are ripe for some good news. Of course, that good news comes through the message of Jesus Christ! This is very evident in the faces of genuine Christians. The church of Christ in Barnaul is a very excited, joyful, happy group who have found meaning to their lives. They view themselves as people on the grassroots of a great movement that will sweep across Russia like wildfire. Most of the church is involved in training of some kind to take the gospel throughout their country. We will be telling you more about the work there over the next few weeks and at the Missions Seminar this weekend. Our seminar with Dr. F. LaGard Smith will be in just two weeks, December 5-7. Brother Smith is very well known for his books on a variety of subjects, including The Cultural Church, Men of Strength for Women of God, and Who Is My Brother?. He is the editor of The Narrated Bible and The Daily Bible which many of you are currently using to read through the Bible in chronological order. He has taught for several years as a professor of Law at Pepperdine University and is currently teaching at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. He is a brilliant thinker. He calls the church to go back to its roots of practicing the Bible and to speak where the Bible speaks. With this said, not everyone agrees with all that he has to say. He understands this and has offered a "Late Night with LaGard" where he will stay up as long as needed after our official sessions are over and discuss the Bible with anyone. I am confident that you will enjoy him. He will be speaking for our regular services on Sunday and each evening Sunday through Tuesday. There will be no mid-week classes that week to encourage all to attend these sessions. "Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20 Welcome Everyone!! To Our Second Annual Mission Sunday! To the Dalton Gardens Church, The Apostle Paul, in writing to the church in Thessalonica, stated that he always thanked God for them because of their work produced by faith and their labor prompted by love and their endurance inspired by hope in Jesus Christ. Like Paul, I too, thank the church in Coeur d'Alene for your work produced by faith and your labor prompted by love and your endurance inspired by hope in Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for the opportunity that was given to me to join Dave and Henry in the trip to Russia; the chance to serve in this manner, to teach and learn from the Christians in Barnaul and to go to a country I probably wouldn't have otherwise had opportunity to go. I learned so much about people and the way that our Lord works through the lives of those who follow Him. I am so thankful that the church in Coeur d'Alene has such an evangelistic focus and has let me be a part of that. Again, I thank you and I love you with the greatest love that there is, with the love of our Lord. Sincerely, Jim Rude F. LaGard Smith A

Mike's Memos IN THE SPOTLIGHT! Coeur d'Alene
High School's dramatic presentation of "Music Man" was excellent. We are
very proud of the super job Clarissa White did in her part as Maud.
The BIG hat was so becoming! Clarissa is a multi-talented, Christ-focused
young lady, a high school junior in our youth group, who spreads happiness
and the love of Jesus all around. As the play points out we all know we
don't need any "trouble in River City...and that starts with a T and that
rhymes with P and that stands for POOL"! Of course, we know that the best
way to keep trouble out of "River City", or Coeur d'Alene, is to follow
the standards set by the Lord. Clarissa has made a solid commitment to
God and his standards, and is very good at sharing her faith with others.
Some of us, it seems, would rather spend our time looking for trouble,
concentrating on the negative things which you can always find.....even
in the church. I love spending time with Clarissa who always has a smile
to share, and seems to see the positive side of everything. Thank you,
Clarissa, for allowing Jesus to be seen in you.....and thank you for a
delightful "Maud".

The First Missionary "So, you are going to leave?" "Yes, Father, I've got to preach to them. They need the good news so badly. I have to go." "It will be so different for you, Son. You may not like it. They are not like us." "I know, Father." "You know you will have to live with them. You will have to eat their food. You will have to speak their language. You will have to share their joys and sorrows, their problems and their pains." "I know that, Father, and I'm prepared for it." "And the situation there is not good. There is a lot of political turmoil, the economy is bad, and the people are restless. They won't be receptive to spiritual things. They won't listen." "But some will, Father, and if I do not go, what will happen to them?" "I know how you feel, Son. I do not want any of them to be lost either. I want them all to know the truth and be saved. I want you to go. But you are my son, and I want to be sure that you know what your are doing; that you know the sacrifice you will have to make, the risks you will be taking, the danger involved. If you leave me, you will be leaving home, comfort, and safety. It's your life I am taking about. Are you willing to give all that up?" "I am willing, Father." "Then go, Son, and my love goes with you." And Jesus went. author unknown- from French World
