STUFF DAVE SHANER
Greetings from Siberia:
It is great that we are able to communicate from all over the world in such a short period of time! Jim Rude (from Astoria), Henry Acosta, and I are having a wonderful time in Barnaul Siberia. I am collecting stories for you about Henry that I can't wait to share. If we survive him, we can do anything! Actually, he has been good for all of the brethren here and it is a wonderful experience for him. The brothers and sisters from the Lord's church here have been very gracious in receiving us so lovingly.
Right now it is Thursday evening Russian time which is early Thursday morning CDA time. We left on Monday morning and went from Spokane to Seattle to Amsterdam to Moscow, Russia to Barnaul, Siberia. We officially arrived in Barnaul about 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The Sizemore's picked us up and had breakfast all ready when we arrived at their "flat". The church here meets on Wednesday evening and I was asked to preach. They had about 80 in attendance. My translator, Anna, is very gifted in foreign languages. Remember that any lesson takes twice as long when you factor in the translation after every phrase. I preached on how Jesus looked at people. Human natures often use people for their own advantage, but Christians need to see God's potential in every man. The people were very appreciative.
The Russians, in my opinion, are a depressed people. You do not see a lot of smiles. One of the reasons for this is the way they have been treated by the system. But the Christians here are the opposite. They radiate hope and joy. Jesus has given them courage and purpose. They were very excited to have us here with them for two weeks. The next day, Jim Rude and I were able to teach at the preaching school here where Jerry Sizemore is the director. They have 24 full-time students in this school with 16 men and 8 women enrolled. We are teaching some lessons over the minor prophets and next week we will be teaching lessons on church leadership.
We have also been able to visit a Christian school that is operated by members of the church here. They have 30 students at this school. They currently have Kindergarten through 2nd grade, with plans to keep adding one grade every year. Most of the students are from the community. Even though their parents are not Christians, they appreciate the quality of instruction and the ethics that are being taught to their children. They have some full-time teachers and some part time who teach specific classes such as music, computers and physical education. All of the teachers are native Russians except for Pam and Levi who teach English one day a week. It was wonderful to see the children share Bible stories and other things that they have been learning with us.
Also, Jerry and Pam, along with some of the other staff from the preaching school have been teaching a "Character Counts" seminar for the public school teachers. This has been received very well. This is taught to a different group every 6 months. I will have the opportunity to visit this seminar tomorrow.
The Sizemores are very influential in the community and are respected a great deal. By our standards they have given up a great deal to teach the gospel in this area of the world. But the rewards of teaching and seeing the people respond are well worth it to them. Be sure to keep them in your prayers. I will let you know more next week. Keep us in your prayers as well.
Have a Great Week!!
"Here, Oh Israel; the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Mike's Memos
Religious busyness is not spirituality, but being busy doing the Lord's work will do wonders to keep us on the spiritual track instead of on the worldly track. If our lives are filled with the busyness of the world ....work, recreation, etc., it is so easy to get out of tune with the Lord, off the spiritual track, and to experience apathy and indifference toward the church and everything religious. It is wonderful to be a part of a congregation of the Lord's Family that constantly offers opportunities to be involved and busy doing things of God.
I'm writing this on Friday morning, but knowing the plan for our fellowship time, Bible classes, and collective worship for this Sunday morning really excites me. By the time you get to read this, I know we will have had a wonderful morning together.
My anticipation for tonight's period of worship and devotion is almost more than I can contain. Our Lord, and our shepherds have inspired me and filled me with enthusiasm and excitement for this special opportunity for rededication, recommitment, and refocusing for us as individual Christians and as a church. I've been telling everybody, "Don't miss Sunday night!!" I hope you'll spend some time this afternoon calling others, especially those who often miss our evening assemblies, and begging them to be here tonight. We will sing; we will pray; we will read from God's word, we will lay our lives before the Lord as "living sacrifices", dedicated to Him and His Church here in Dalton. There will be no classes tonight. Everyone will meet together as families, and as Family, in the small auditorium for this special time of worship.
Another wonderful opportunity for us to be busy in the Lord is our Mission Workshop and Mission Sunday with Gailyn & Rebecca Van Rheenen coming up in a couple of weeks. I hope no one is thinking they don't have time to participate and be challenged to grow in our understanding of Christ's mission. It's great to be a part of a mission-minded church...one that encourages me to be busy teaching my friends about Jesus, and be sharing my resources to help send others to the mission fields. What are you planning to give on Mission Sunday???
And then two weeks later one of our brotherhood's most astute thinkers / teachers / authors, F. LaGard Smith, will help us look carefully at the confusing subject, "Who Is My Brother?" Every time I read one of LaGard's books, I'm impressed with his scholarship, and his attention to details and carefulness in "rightly dividing" and applying God's word. He will bring us many years of biblical study and experience, and help us in our struggle with spiritual identity. Our building should be packed for every session. Who are you going to bring?
If your life is dull and boring, come on by the church office and we'll give you a few of the zillion things you can be busy doing in the service of our awesome God. It's truly a great life when you are busy serving the Lord.

True Victory
Anyone who has suffered through high school Latin is familiar with the phrase, "Veni, vidi, vici." It means "I came, I saw, I conquered." It is found in a letter Julius Caesar wrote to Amautis describing his victory at Zela in 47 B.C. It was Caesar's motto.
But his empire finally crumbled, and he who was the conqueror became the conquered.
Jesus, who possessed infinitely greater power, lived his life by a strange and unexpected twist of Caesar's saying. Jesus lived by the motto, "I came, I saw, I surrendered." By living out his unorthodox pronouncement, Jesus demonstrated that what the world regards as power is really impotence. True victory is only through surrender.
